This is a novella about “Jingpiao” –  people who drift around trying to make a living in Beijing. The author unveils the dark, turbulent, embarrassing, but somehow comical life of these special people who live at the bottom of society. Following Dunhuang’s trail, readers can dive into the bizarre and complex reality of social networks in academia, the police force, and business administration authorities.

Running Through Zhongguancun describes the life conditions of people like Dunhuang. Though their lives are sometimes difficult, these young people are full of energy and have a passion for life. The author’s skilled and delicate language brings readers into the lives of Dunhuang and his friends who collectively are known as the “ant tribe”. It can be seen that the author appreciates their persistent struggle for better lives and vitality.

The work is full of the spirit of criticism and it is an important masterpiece of the bottom literature since the millennium. We can see in the story the young contemporary writer’s concerns for reality and his courage in uncovering social conflicts.

徐则臣，1978年出生于江苏东海，北京大学中文系硕士毕业，曾于2009年赴美国克瑞顿大学(Creighton University)做驻校作家，2010年参加美国爱荷华大学国际写作计划（IWP），现为《人民文学》杂志社编辑。

他的作品被认为“标示出了一个人在青年时代达到的灵魂眼界”。短篇小说《如果大雪封门》荣获第六届鲁迅文学奖。2014年凭借《耶路撒冷》获得老舍文学奖，并且在2015年提名第九届茅盾文学奖。另外，他著有长篇小说《午夜之门》《夜火车》，中短篇小说集《鸭子是怎样飞上天的》等，部分作品已被翻译成德、英、日、韩、意、蒙、荷、俄、西等多种语言。

Xu Zechen, born in 1978 in Donghai, Jiangsu, obtained a Master’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University, and is now an editor at People’s Literature Magazine. In 2009 he went to Creighton University as an author-in-resident, and in 2010 he took part in the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program (IWP).

His works have been deemed as “managing to identify exceptional vision and outlook of a young writer”. His short story If a Snowstorm Seals the Door was awarded the 6th Lu Xun Literature Prize. In 2014 he was awarded Lao She Literature Prize for his outstanding work Jerusalem and in 2015 he was nominated for the 9th Mao Dun Literature Prize. He has published the novels Midnight’s Door and Night Train, and a collection of short stories and novellas entitled How Geese Fly up to Heaven. Some of his works have been translated into German, English, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Mongolian, Dutch, Russian and Spanish.

我出来啦。敦煌张开嘴想大喊一声。三个月前，他和保定在海淀桥旁边因贩卖假证被警察抓住。敦煌不知道要去哪里，也没地方可去。在一栋楼底下，他遇见一个卖碟的女孩——夏小荣。两个人攀谈起来，女孩说虽然卖碟的生意算过得去，但是她始终想回老家去，想要一个自己的家，有个老公，有个孩子。饭后，两人一起回到女孩的出租屋，并睡在了一起。

敦煌知道女孩有男朋友后，便不想和她待在一起。整整一天他都在浮尘天气里跑，之前的出租屋被房东收了回去，也没找了另外几个办假证的朋友，垂头丧气的他晃晃荡荡又来到芙蓉里夏小容的住所。

夏小荣让敦煌与自己一起去卖碟。因为他对各种电影都很熟悉，同时办假证时练就的嘴皮子，使他和顾客更谈得来，所以卖碟的生意很好。为了多挣钱把保定赎出来。他开始贩卖黄色光碟。敦煌的碟卖得好，几乎每天挣的都比夏小容多，但他不愿意靠着这种含混的关系继续含混地寄居下去。

在离北大不远的承泽园的一个地下室，敦煌住了下来。同租住的三个室友都是来北大听课的，准备考研究生。 某天，他回到夏小荣的住处准备取光碟时，遇见了她的男朋友旷山。因为不想再去打扰夏小容的生活，敦煌开始从旷山与朋友开的那家叫“寰宇”的碟店进货。

因被同室友怀疑偷手机，敦煌搬到了蔚秀园。在卖碟的同时，他开始寻找一个叫七宝的女人。因为在保定嘱咐他出来了就去找七宝，并照顾好她。

在送货的过程中，敦煌遇见一个知春里的女孩，这个女孩漂亮、富有，但总是板着脸，叼着女士烟，她每次只一两张，而且只要暴力和恐怖片。敦煌不理解，觉得应该把她从暴力和恐怖片的世界里拯救出来。但过了一段时间后，当他再次去时，却看见门上两道又大又白的封条。

一番努力后，敦煌终于找到了七宝。打扮时尚的她性格直爽，同样干着倒卖假证的行当。大胆、泼辣，对什么都无所谓的七宝喜欢独来独往，不受管束。积攒了些钱后，敦煌和七宝去监狱看望了保定，但是七宝却没有进去和保定见面。

当他再次见到夏小荣时，她已经怀孕了，而旷山和朋友开的卖碟店也被警察查封了，但是没多久，他们又开始卖起碟来。七宝被抓了。敦煌向旷山借了钱，从派出所里将她带了回来。

某天下午，敦煌在卖碟时见到了同样在卖碟的旷山和夏小容。正当旷山与两个买碟人在远处交易时，警察发现了他们。情急之中，夏小容瘫坐在地上，一股红色的液体从她两腿之间流出来。为了救旷山，敦煌撒谎称碟是自己的，并被警察带走了。

I am out! Dunhuang opens his mouth, having an impulse to yell. He and Baoding were captured by police 3 months ago, on account of selling false certificates next to Haidian Bridge. Dunhuang does not know where to go, neither does he have a place to go. He then meets Xia Xiaorong, a girl who sells discs, outside a building. They chat. The girl says that the sale of these discs can buy her daily bread, but she wants to go back to her hometown, to have a family, a hubby, and some children. After dinner, they go back to the girl’s rented apartment. That night, they sleep together.

When Dunhuang learns that Xiaorong has a boyfriend, he wants to stop the relationship. He lingers around all day as dust blows through the city. He finds out that his previous apartment has been taken back by the owner, and cannot find his friends who make false certificates. Disappointed and exhausted, he wanders back to Xiaorong’s residence in Furong Street.

Xiaorong persuades Dunhuang to join her in selling discs. Dunhuang finds himself good at the job because he is familiar with all types of movies and he knows how to talk with people and because his years of experience selling false certificates. Dunhuang needs more money to bail out Baoding, so he starts to sell illegal prostitution videos. His business goes well. Almost every day, he makes more money than Xiaorong. However, he does not want to live in an ambiguous relationship with her.

He moves to a basement close to Chengzeyuan, Peking University. His three roommates are students preparing for their graduate entrance examination. One day, he runs into Xiaorong’s boyfriend, Kuangshan, when he returns to Xiaorong’s apartment to pick up discs. In order to distance himself from Xiaorong, Dunhuang starts to purchase discs from “Huangyu”, a store owned by Kuangshan and his friend.

One of the roommates suspects that Dunhuang stole his cell phones, so Dunhuang moves to Weixiuyuan. While he is selling his discs, he begins to look for a girl named Qibao that Baoding asks him to take care of.

One day, when Dunhuang delivers, he encounters a girl living in Zhichun Street. The girl is pretty and rich, but never smiles and always dangles a cigarette in her mouth. Each time, she asks for one or two violent, horror movies. Dunhuang does not understand. He feels it necessary to save her from her movie-world of violence and horror. However, when he goes to visit her for next time, he finds that the door is sealed by two big white seals.

Finally, after significant efforts, Dunhuang finds Qibao. She is a fashionable, extroverted, and straightforward girl engaged in the same business as Dunhuang – selling false certificates. Bold and tempestuous, Qibao does not care about anything in her life. She enjoys her life free of responsibilities. Dunhuang and Qibao visit Baoding after they have some money. However, Qibao does not go in to meet Baoding.

When Dunhuang sees Xiaorong again, she is already pregnant and Kuangshan’s disc store has been closed by the police. Soon, they start to sell discs again. This time, Qibao is seized by the police. Dunhuang borrows money from Kuangshan to bail her out from the police station.

One day, in the afternoon, while he is selling discs, Dunhuang sees Xiaorong and Kuangshan who are doing the same. As Kuangshan deals with two buyers, the police catch them. In shock, Xiaorong collapses to the ground. Pregnant, her water has broken. To save Kuangshan, Dunhuang lies, saying that he is the owner of the discs. He is then taken away by the police.
